Building a coil gun

fastbike says...

I might want to build a small coil gun.

Later on, when I have the money, I'd very much like to build a humongous one, but it'll have to wait

Anyway, if I got this right I need:

Capacitors
Power supply to charge them
Wire
A tube for the barrel
Steel rods or balls to shoot
And probably a SCR to discharge the capacitors into the coil, because a normal switch would, I imagine, fuse itself shut (this I learned from my recent thread about welders).

Since it'd be a small one-coil gun I wouldn't need timing circuits to energize the coils in sequence.

Am I missing anything? Any recommendations?

yep, the 'search' function of this forum!

It's a pretty hot topic and covered in many guises.
